What are the Russians up to?

On Saturday, Russian bombers were “escorted” away from a flyover of the USS Nimitz battleship in the Pacific. Apparently they are trying to assert themselves over the US plan to build missile defence shields in former Soviet countries like the Czech Republic. But why?

A U.S. military official says that one Russian Tupolev 95 flew directly over the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz twice, at a low altitude of about 2,000 feet, while another bomber circled about 58 miles out. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the reports on the flights were classified as secret.

If the US is saying it needs these shields to defend its allies (which to my knowledge currently includes the Ruskies) from attack from Iran, why is Russia so nervous? Well, maybe it’s because Russia has been supplying Iran’s nukes. I’ve been thinking about htis a lot lately, but not in much depth, which I really ought to remedy… During the Cold War, we (the West) equipped Islamic nations like Afghanistan and Chechnya to fight the Soviets. Yet now, as Putin shifts ever further back into leftist totalitarianism, those two groups - the Commies and the Islamists - seem to be banding together, despite their differing ideologies.

Which now leaves America on guard against China and North Korea - both Commie countries. Add Russia - almost Commie. And now Islamic countries that are being suplied by Communist countries. Looking at it from a macro point of view, it’s terrifying to think that we may have to fight the Cold War again, but this time we’ve thrown hot-blooded Jihadis into the mix, to work against us instead of for us.

And it’s not only us the Russians are trying to assert themselves against - our greatest ally against the ChiComs and North Koreans is Japan.

Japan, meanwhile, filed a formal protest with the Russian Embassy in Tokyo after Saturday’s incident, saying that one of the Russian bombers crossed into Japanese airspace for three minutes. Russia has denied there was an intrusion.
