I feel so much safer

Toronto will never have crime again! I’m so excited! At long last, the murders will end, the sirens will be silenced, and candy gumdrops will grow on money trees.

After a long, at times bitter and widely diverging debate, Toronto city council passed a series of measures to stamp out gun violence this afternoon by a two-thirds margin.

The 31-9 vote was a victory for Mayor David Miller, who had championed the steps in order to give the city the moral authority to push other levels of government to get tough on gun crime after council voted strongly in April to ask Ottawa to enact a national handgun ban.

We’ll all sleep soundly from now on. Those pesky target shooters and gun collectors are going DOWN!

  4. Mayor Miller proves he can fool most of his urbanites most of the time! They are settling for rhetoric instead of action. I lived in the GTA before David Miller moved to TO in 1981. Pre-Miller was a time that gangs weren’t on the rise the way they have been during Miller’s tenure as mayor. The lesson is no gangs = no gun problems. Simple, yet the deniers and firearms haters amongst us will not recognise the obvious truth when confronted with it. Closing legitimate gun ranges is not addressing the gang issue. Banning the legitimate use of handguns plays well to the uninformed but sadly adds nothing to public safety.

It is also arrogant to attack what is an historic firearms culture for the sake of short-term political gain. WLM is right when he reads fascism into Miller’s actions. But then this mayor seems keen on increasing his own personal power at the expense of democratic ideals and personal rights.

  5. Because, you know, if it’s illegal to own a handgun, the criminals who were off killing people with them will obviously hand them over! Once again, it is the law-abiding citizen who suffers.
