So much for control

The Chinese couldn’t control the smog, couldn’t control the clouds, and couldn’t control the murderer among them.

A Chinese man stabbed to death a relative of a U.S. Olympic coach at a Beijing tourist spot on Saturday before committing suicide, casting a shadow over the first day of sporting action at the Games.

The victim was identified only as an American man who was related to a coach on the U.S. men’s volleyball team. An American woman, also part of the coach’s family, was injured in the attack, along with a Chinese tour guide.

A Chinese man attacked them shortly after midday at the centuries-old, 45-metre-high (148-ft-high) Drum Tower in central Beijing. He died after leaping from the Tower after the attack.

The only reason we’re hearing about it is because the Chinese can’t control the foreign media, either.

  1. You couldn’t pay me enough money to visit China right now. China: enter at your own risk.

  2. I read a Canadian news report…the person interviewed was a Westerner living in China for the past 20 years or so. He said it was an isolated case, could happen anywhere, he felt very safe in China, etc. Then he made one last remark - didn’t Canada just have a beheading?

I thought, yes, and the homicidal maniac was a Chinese immigrant. Just an observation.

  3. Thought he was Vietnamese..China is very safe for travellers and tourists…also for expats living and working there…many people I know travel all over China…in groups or on their own…as I did, and several I know have lived there for about 10 years now…Thousands and thousands of teachers all over mainland China… This was an isolated incident…cracked psycho..like the cannibal in Manitoba…

  4. No, the Greyhound beheader was Chinese. I’m with Raphael - no way I’ll visit China. The only reason we’re hearing about this is thanks to the presence of foreign media. Once the Olympics are over, it’s back to the usual information control.
