Re: The Steyn Verdict
From Free Mark Steyn
Hmph. What do you think? Time to wrap this up? Has one of Canada’s top 25 political blogs done what it was supposed to, so make room for somebody else on Jago’s list?
Of course, as the noted Binks puts it:
“It’s very good news for Mark Steyn, of course, though not for his pocketbook.
But nothing has changed– we still have quasi-judicial tribunals ruling on free speech, so the basic question still remains: does the government have the right to regulate free speech and thought in Canada?
Until we get some serious revision of the Human Rights Act, there’s nothing stopping anyone from walking up and slapping Steyn or Ezra Levant or whomever else they don’t like with any number of human rights complaints. Months of mock-trial, expensive layers, and trouble ensues again.
The ordinary Joe or Jane Canuck is no safer today than last year when this all started. The Human Rights Commissions have probably learned only two things: the internet bites back when bloggers get rolling on an issue; and don’t chew on famous and well-connected targets.â€
As there are many un-famous Canadians suffering under the “Tyranny of Nice,” Binky’s work at Free Mark Steyn isn’t done yet. Just like the late Martin Luther King JR is still invoked to deal with the scourge of inequality, so must Steyn still be invoked to deal with those who seek to silence satire, polemics, and even straight journalism. Could you imagine if these crazy Muslims had decided that the news was offensive on 9/11?

Binks owes me money so he ain’t goin nowhere.
