This really is vile. I don’t mean in the usual rhetorical sense where some breach of procedure occurred so some backbencher can pay off his summer home in Arizona. I think the Canadian public has come to accept that sort of personal corruption in Canadian politics as ‘business as usual’. However this article by the venerable Ezra Levant exposes how Warren Kinsella, a central figure in ‘Adscam’, (Canada’s most significant example of political corruption) subverted the very machinery of democracy itself. The maneuvering of institutions of the state from non partisan to blatantly partisan even to the extent of political affiliation of the parents of the people involved. See this example from sworn testimony..

“MR. CLERMONT: …I did object on a number of occasions. For example, during the labour dispute, I was asked to retain the services of a lawyer other than the one who was doing it on the pretext that that lawyer’s father was a conservative, but he had been appointed by vote, and I refused. I said “You don’t change horses in the middle of the race”, and the result was a lot of headaches for me with the stakeholder”

Yes lawyers for various government actions were changed in the middle of proceedings because the lawyers father was a conservative. This is something right out of the playbook of Hugo Chavez. To be clear, democracy has little to do with a bunch of idiots voting on things. It has to do with the nature of institutions of state and the extent to which they are free of interference from partisan politics. The Liberals have acted towards these institutions in ways that would make Robert Mugabe proud.

Please take the time to read Ezra’s account of all this with the thought in the back of you’re mind that Mr. Kinsella has launched a number of law suits now against Ezra clearly as a punitive process and having nothing whatsoever to do with the merits truth or importance of Levant’s claims. Kinsella seems to know only one thing. How to abuse the institutions of state for personal gain. Here is the URL again from Ezra’s excellent blog.
