Palestinians Whinging: Must be a day ending in a “y”

Because Muslims are suspect of all things cultural or historical that they can’t blow up or steal, they are choosing to picket in front of the Royal Ontario Museum. The Museum, you see, is showing an exhibition of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Fascinating, and something I’d like to see. As a Catholic, we don’t buy into the Christian relevance of the Scrolls, but the historical value is undeniable.

The Jew haters, however, are really wrapped up in, uh, Jew hating. They are whining that the Scrolls were “stolen” by Israel. Heh. I’m reminded of a Biblical passage… “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”. From a culture that claims to have invented chess (they didn’t) and medicine (they didn’t), to accuse another culture of stealing is pretty rich. Considering that when the Scrolls were created, there were no Muslims! Mohammad hadn’t even been born yet, let alone was he slicing heads or screwing nine-year-olds. The claim is as absurd as saying the Scientologists own the Scrolls.

The usual suspects will be out in front of the ROM tomorrow night at 6pm. Why then? Because the Jews will all be home preparing for the Sabbath, of course! They always plan it that way! There will of course be a counter protest that you are strongly recommended to join. But again, it’s the start of the Sabbath, so it will be small. No coincidence.

In other news I found searching for info, one of my favorite restaurants has gone all Jew-hatey too, unfortunately.

Le Select Bistro on Wellington had this to say on their website, till they pulled it:

“Although we endeavour in this page to bring you the best this city offers, we wish – uncharacteristically – to warn against a show whose artifacts were obtained by force and looting, and which the ROM is – astonishingly – set on featuring. The socalled Dead Sea Scrolls…showcases artifacts seized by Israel in its 1967 surprise war, which it waged against its neighbours. The war led to the seizure and the ongoing military occupation of many lands, including the West Bank, from where the scrolls were taken. They had been excavated in the early 50s’ (sic) by the Ecole Biblique Francaise, the Palestine Archaeological Museum, and the Department of Antiquities of Jordan. They represent a collection of nearly 900 ancient manuscripts, including portions of the Old Testament written in Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek. By showcasing these artefacts, the ROM is violating Canada’s responsibilities under the UNESCO Conventions and Protocols relating to cultural objects seized by arms and its own obligations as a principal member of the Canadian Museums Association (CMA).”

The site also connected readers to an anti-Israel petition by Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME).

“I don’t think I was taking any political side,” Geisweiller said. Rather, he was highlighting “the fact that there’s a controversy about it.”

The restaurateur said he used to be sympathetic towards the Jewish state, when it was based more on socialism, but “I am troubled when I see the extreme right having political power in Israel.”

Hope to see you down at the ROM tomorrow evening.

  1. Hey Wendy,

Here’s a novel idea for those going to picket at the ROM.

Why not take a couple bags of garbage and drop it off Toronto City hall and make it Toronto’s newest collection site while on the way to ROM.

As far as the Scrolls, go I can’t get to Toronto to see the scrolls first hand either.. . . .

    Pity!

  2. “The so-called Dead Sea Scrolls…showcases artifacts seized by Israel in its 1967 surprise war, which it waged against its neighbours.”

Yeah, because the poor defenceless arab nations (decapitalisation intentional) obviously didn’t see it coming after kicking out the UN peace-keeping force that had been in the Sinai Peninsula for 10 years, and then sending 1,000 tanks and 100,000 troops to Israel’s border.

All this I found out after a 5-second search on Wiki, which strives to be neutral but maintains a left bent on most things political.

Gotta love people who 1) don’t know their history and 2) can’t be arsed even checking their facts before blithely spreading their propaganda.

“…to warn against a show whose artifacts were obtained by force and looting, and which the ROM is – astonishingly – set on featuring.”

Again, “yeah”. Just how many ancient Egyptian artefacts were looted and taken by force by treasure hunters from all over the world, not to mention Inca, Aztec, Chinese, Persian, and any other ancient or merely old dead cultures throughout history?

I just love revisionist historians, retconning modern sensibilities and attitudes into past times where they have no place. Empires were the way of the world back then. It’s only since the 1700s that another type of nation existed at all.

  3. As a really effective counter-protest, I’d suggest buying tickets and going to see the Scrolls. Money talks. I for one plan on holding my ticket high as I walk past the protesters tomorrow night.

  4. Is it too much to hope that they will use their powers for good and blow that silly crystal sky high?

  5. The existence of the Dead Sea Scrolls proves that there was a significant Jewish presence in Israel since ancient times, and reaffirms the legitimacy of the recreation of the State of Israel.

It’s sad because the Scrolls are about a million times more meaningful to the Jewish people than they are to the Palestinian people, and they are important in terms of the history of Israel. But still, several Palestinian groups and those who are “In Solidarity” want to complain and take the scrolls away from the Jews/Israel - simply because they are important to the Jews/Israel. Not because they are important to the Palestinian people. More petty fight-picking.

Can’t wait to buy my ticket! Supporting the exhibit is the best way of sticking it to these people, but a counter-protest would be fun in the meantime! :)

  6. As my Dad said to me yesterday: “We have the Dead Sea Scrolls, and they have the DEAD BEAT SCROLLS (the koran)”….

  7. Mr. Right, that’s the first thing that crossed my mind too. I remember the ‘67 war. It was started by the Arabs, as was the Yom Kippur war.

  8. I liked what the restaurateur had to say. He made his point with a lot of sense and didn’t come off sounding like a total rascist.

  12. Geisweiller is not only ignorant, he is (wittingly or not) part of a campaign of cultural cleansing being waged against Jews by the Muslim world.

As Britain’s Lyn Julius has pointed out, Islam claims Maimonides as Muslim in an attempt to “disappear” Jewish identity. Geisweiller’s false calims are in the same vein.

In point of fact, the Scrolls were discovered decades before the 1967 war. The Bedu shepherds who initially found them committed a crime against the Jews by severely damaging these archaeological treasures in order to gain more money.

As the scrolls are a Jewish national heritage, such actions were criminal. So, too, were the extortion gentile intermediaries extracted from the government of Israel in holding the scrolls for ransom.

Just as outrageous - but little-known - is the Egyptian insistence that Israel hand over to Egypt Jewish artifacts Israel found in the Sinai. Egypt blackmailed Israel into giving in by threatening not to sign the Sinai peace treaty.
