POLITICS BRINGS OUT THE WORST IN US
Politics brings out the worst in us.
One is more vile the more there is at stake.
Leveraging a little animus,
It turns mere opposition into hate.
The lava bubbling underneath each heart,
Inhibited by guilt or love or fear,
Comes bursting forth, by scribes with subtle art
Stoked vigorously as new elections near.
LIFE IS CHANGING FOR US NOW
Life is changing for us now,
But never how I feel for you.
I can love a man and still
Not love you any less.
Love is not like bread or gold:
Just so much and then no more;
One gets this and one gets that,
And then there’s nothing left.
Love is much more like the sun,
Which shines on one or more the same.
The light it gives to someone else
Takes none from you away.
I love you with a love just like
The light of which God made all things,
Made earth and heaven, tears and stars,
Of which my bones are made.
IF YOU LOVED ME, YOU’D BE THERE FOR ME
If you loved me, you’d be there for me
To help me do the things I want to do.
My whole life wouldn’t be only for you,
Nor would my love determine who you’d be.
I want you to respect what I do well,
To share the joy I feel when I succeed,
To give me the encouragement I need,
To be my wings, not my protective shell.
I love you, and I want you to be mine,
But I would never say you’re not allowed
To be a person who would make me proud,
To step outside into your own sunshine.
Ever I loved you, though I could not have you.
Most of my life was lived in Charlotte’s shadow.
I stalked the house, meowing, muttering,
Love my joy, my burden, and my sorrow.
Yet not in silence did I do without you.
I CANNOT THINK YOU’RE NOT ALIVE SOMEWHERE
I cannot think you’re not alive somewhere.
I think of you just as I did before.
No sudden gust of wind has closed the door
Or made your presence vanish in thin air.
I write you this because I know you’re there;
That even after death there must be more.
So does faith one’s inner sun restore
After bitter darkness few can bear.
My mind and heart have not yet lost a friend
Even though my senses are bereft,
For you remain the witness of my soul.
No mere accident our love can end
So long as I have will and memory left,
And you lie silent on some unknown shoal.
HOW CAN LOVE HOLD ON SO MANY YEARS
How can love hold on so many years?
A passion lasts, we’re told, not more than two.
Pleasure is more rich when passion clears,
Pouring forth from love to love renew.
Years of love can gather to an ocean
Tormented in its wild constancy.
When there’s no wind, it seems bereft of motion;
Eastward, though, the waves roll wild and free.
No love can last unless there is the will.
Tapestries are woven by design.
Years pass and love continues, stronger still
For all the daily care to make it shine.
In life, if there is one, then we are blessed,
For whom we can be totally undressed;
Take off our selves and find our spirits fair;
Hunger for sweet love, and it is there.
THANK YOU FOR BEING THE HEART OF MY LIFE
Thank you for being the heart of my life,
Harboring me in the arms of your love,
Anchoring me in the rock of your faith,
Needing me, that I not be in vain,
Knowing me well, yet loving me still.
You are the island I’ve found in my sea,
Ocean I dwell in and deep where I dive,
Unfailing heaven and passionate earth.
