X-tra Hype: BMW Releases “Spy Photos” of Forthcoming X2 Crossover ""

BMW’s not done splitting crossover hairs. After introducing the shapely X4 and X6 crossovers as counterparts to the boxy X3 and X5, the company will next bring the X2 to market. Essentially, it’s a comelier BMW X1 by another name. Previewed as a concept at last year’s Paris auto show, the German company is now teasing the forthcoming production X2 with a handful of photos of a camouflaged prototype vehicle.

While the X2 may serve the same essential purpose of the X4 and X6, the latest BMW crossover trades its slinky siblings’ fastback shape for a more traditional roofline. Thanks to the X2’s—presumably—lower height and higher window line, BMW’s new small SUV sports sleeker proportions compared to the more upright X1. The X2’s distinct mug features angry-looking headlights as well a prominent kidney grille, all befitting its more aggressive aesthetic.

Like the X1, the X2 will ride on BMW’s front-wheel-drive-based UKL platform. Although a front-wheel-drive X2 is all but certain for some global markets, we’d wager the X2 will be an all-wheel-drive-only affair in the United States. Power is expected to come from BMW’s B46 turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine. Output from that engine should mimic the X1’s 228-hp figure, while we expect the X2 to also offer an M Performance variant with more power.

Look for BMW to unveil the X2 before the end of the year, perhaps at the Frankfurt auto show in September, with sales beginning by the early part of 2018.
